| What causes people to sleep poorly? Many people who suffer from insomnia start to sleep poorly for some understandable reason. For example, you may have started to sleep poorly because a baby or child kept you awake at night, or because of a car accident, divorce, death of a loved one, some other trauma or life event, or simply an accumulation of stress, arguments or worries at work or at home. Then the understandable reason passes, yet the bad sleep continues (sometimes for many months or years) as a habit. In other cases, the reason the insomnia began is not remembered or is not known (Idiopathic Insomnia) - again, the bad sleep continues for no obvious reasons as a habit.
