| If you have a sleep problem, does it mean you must be depressed? It has been well documented, and it is certainly true, that depression can lead to sleep problems. However, the reverse is also true; long-standing sleep problems can often cause depression. In such a case, it is the sleep problem that needs to be treated, not the depression. I have worked with many insomnia sufferers who had been treated unsuccessfully with anti-depressant medication, electric shock therapy (ECT), psychiatry and so forth, whose depression lifted as soon as they began to sleep better.
